By 1776, as the nation began to evolve into a crucible for human rights and dignity, Thomas Jefferson, although an avid slaveowner himself, felt compelled to speak out against the institution of slavery because it was not in keeping with the political spirit of the times. Jefferson chose to attack the crown for bringing slavery to America's shores in the first place. As Morris tells it, "Jefferson's attack on the role of the crown in the slave trade ('He has prostituted his negative for suppressing every legislative attempt to prohibit or to restrain this execrable commerce') was unacceptable to the Southern delegates at the Continental Congress and was stricken from the document."
