Functionalism in Anthropology

as they show commonalities. Two important anthropologists of this early period were Malinowski and A.R. Radcliffe-Brown, and though some of the early writings of these two gurus had much in common, they and their followers would take divergent paths. For Malinowski, the central issue of anthropology was the problem faced by every fieldworker--how to interpret the bizarre quality which pervades so much of the behavior encountered in the exotic settings usually chosen by anthropologists for their research. His answer was basically that, as soon as the social context is fully understood, the bizarre quality disappears. He considered human behavior in context, and in this way various aspects of human social behavior--domestic, economic, legal, political, magico-religious, technological--fit together in a sensible fashion (Leach, 1982, p. 28).
