Cultural continuity and discontinuity theories have been used to explain sociocultural adjustment in some Latino families in the U.S. (Delgado-Gaitan, p. 55). This study looked at how Mexican Americans have achieved and advanced in employment, school, and political life and found it had a great deal to do with home life and whether daily cultural practices were valued and maintained within the group. These factors would impact any group of Latino American children studied, as they may be caught in cross-cultural conflict between what they learned at home and what they were taught in school.

At home, the children would be influenced by cultural practices brought from their parents' native lands, while at school they would be influenced by American culture in their interactions with American children, and by being exposed to the American way of life and cultural values while outside the home.
