A key issue in this film revolves around a mission statement written by Maguire suggesting a more ethical business approach for his company, and the response of that company is to fire him. Kyle Pierson refers to the movie and notes that Maguire is experiencing a midlife breakdown at the height of his career "when he realizes that he long ago abandoned the values that made him fall in love with the business" (Pierson 1). He decides to reinvent himself and the company of which he is a part, and to do this, he writes a mission statement "which boldly proposes that the company represent fewer clients and strive to give them more personal attention" (Pierson 1).
