This very current model of the effective organizational leader translates well to the effective church leader and can be considered the conceptual framework underlying this study's examination of church leadership. One of the characteristics of the general model that is perhaps the most important with respect to church leadership is the characteristic of being a visionary. In the next section of the review, the literature on the church leader as a visionary is examined.
Luper (1998) has discussed the role of vision in the church in general and in church leadership in particular. According to Luper, the visionary church leader has a firm understanding of what the church is fundamentally suppose to be doing and how well it is doing it. Moreover, the notions of vision held by such leaders as well as their view of the visionary role is biblically based (e.g., Proverbs 29:18; I Sam. 3:1).
