induced debility (food or sleep deprivation), monopolization of perceptions (limiting access to information), emotional abuse and degradation (name-calling and insults), induced altered states of consciousness (through hypnotic induction or forced alcohol/drug use), occasional indulgences (showing love to the victim to make her believe that the violence and abuse will end). Another form of abuse is stalking. This occurs when the victim has attempted to leave the abuser or brought legal action against him. Stalking can include threatening letters or phone calls, appearing at the victim's place of work or home when specifically asked not to, or other types of coercion intended to make the victim return to the abuser. Stalking can also result in the death of the victim. (Dutton & Waltz, 1995, p. 16).
