A. Rousseau's attempt to find a balance between individual freedom and social order ends up sacrificing the individual to the community.

No one is indifferent to the teachings of Jean Jacques Rousseau. Every student of political theory recognizes the tremendous impact this political philosopher has had on modern thinking ever since his classic work, The Social Contract. All will agree that this classic work and others by Rousseau have helped guide the Enlightenment. But that is as far as the agreement goes. Rousseau's writings have been praised by some as the grandest treatise on equality and human rights; and they have been railed against by some as a blueprint for totalitarianism.

This research will explore the philosophies of Jean Jacques Rousseau. The basis for these disagreements over his writings will be examined and several judgments will be offered. In order to better understand the nature of Rousseau's philosophy, the man's life and experiences will also be discussed.
