The title of the novel comes from a poem by John Donne, cited at the beginning of the novel: "And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee." The reference is to the fact that the death of anyone, announced by the tolling of the bell, diminishes us all, for we are all joined together in society. In terms of the themes of the novel, this refers to the fact that Robert Jordan dies in order to serve the greater good of society at large, and his death is not isolated or separated form society but is instead a part of the larger movement of history.
