of high seismic risk. This proposal includes a network of strong-motion sensors distributed symmetrically around a nuclear power plant. These sensors transmit ground acceleration data in real time over a radio link to the power plant. If any station in the network measures an acceleration above a specified threshold, the power plant is shut down (Esayan, 1997).

A temporary EAS was deployed by the USGS soon after the October 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake to warn workers on the severely damaged Cypress overpass structure of large aftershocks originating near the Loma Prieta epicenter. This system consisted of three seismometers forming a three-mile-aperture array near the epicenter. Data were telemetered in real time to Menlo Park where a detector monitored the data from the three stations.
