Ethical Analysis of Tom's of Maine

gned to develop a mission statement. All employees of Tom's formed committees which worked in small groups, then in larger groups to develop a statement of purpose which included protection for employees and the larger community.

There are a number of statements of values and mission both in Chappell's book and on the Tom's of Maine web pages. For example, there is a Statement of Beliefs and the Mission Statement itself (pp. 32-33) in the book, in which the basics of the business (and the man) are enumerated. What are some of these beliefs?

The beliefs include a statement that both human beings and nature have inherent worth and deserve respect, that they believe in providing employees with a safe and fulfilling work environment, and that they believe that the company can be financially successful while behaving in a socially responsible and environmentally sensitive manner. In the Mission Statement, the emphasis is on service, relationship, respect, meaningful work, personal value, focus on community concerns, and long-term value and sustainability.

Further, on the web pages devoted to the company, there are several additional values statements, including one on respect for animals, one on mission ownership, and one on environmental responsibility. In the animal testing statement, there is an emphasis on alternative forms of testing to provide safe products, along with the use of components that do not include animal ingredients in any product formulations. In addition, the company noted that it took the lead in pushing the FDA to adopt a testing protocol for fluoride toothpaste that did not require testing which involved laboratory animals (Animal testing, 1998).
