DOING BUSINESS IN SAUDI ARABIA

is a conservative country that has a tradition of religious asceticism or austerity.

During the early history of the Arabian Peninsula, there were two different groups of people inhabiting the region. One group lived in the Yemen, a fairly settled existence, while another group, the nomadic tribes, lived in the central and northern Arabian Peninsula. It is this nomadic group that came to be termed "Arabs" (Lerrick and Mian, 1987).

Before the time of Muhammad, the tribes basically lived without codified law. It was custom that ruled their lives, although they also responded to the commercial code of the region, which was similar to the Law Merchant in Europe. It was not until the Quran was received and promulgated that a codified system of law came to rule these people. It is this law derived from the Quran that is the fundamental law in Saudi Arabia.
