There has been research investigating for factors that effect recidivism rates. In this regard, it has been found than when compared to non-recidivists, recividists tend to be unemployed (Elah-Lawrence & Slade, 1986), to have distinguishing personality characteristics (McMahon & Flynn, 1985), to be lower in their level of marital satisfaction (McCrady & Noel, 1986), to have lower anxiety levels (Baar & Conner, 1985), to experience less beenfit from conscious insight into the reasons for his/her drinking (Baar & Conner, 1985), and to make less effective use of coping skills (Nathan & Skinstad, 1987).

As can be seen from the foregoing, researach focusing on differences between recidivists and non-recidivists are slowly contributing to the development of an overall profile of those patients who are most likely to experience relapse following outpatient treatment.
