Factionalism became even stronger during the six years in which Chamoun was in office. More than a score of significant factions may be identified in Lebanon. Generally, however, these factions may be viewed as parts of two dominant, if shifting, coalitionsthe Status Quo Coalition, and the Revisionist Coalition.12 The leaders of the factions included in the Status Quo Coalition formalized their cooperation, through the establishment of the Lebanese Front.13 The major elements of the Status Quo Coalition were as follows:
