960s, Jackson's arrival on the staff of the SCLC corresponded to a new phase in the American Civil Rights Movement. This was characterized by a shift in emphasis from freedom to equality, and in Jackson's own words (1963),

Twenty years ago, we came to these hallowed grounds as a rainbow coalition to demand our freedom. Twenty years later, we have our freedom  our civil rights. . . Apartheid is over. But, twenty years later, we still do not have equality. We have moved in. Now we must move up. . . Twenty years ago, we were stripped of our dignity. Twenty years later, we are stripped of our share of power. The absence of segregation is not the presence of social justice or equality. . .5

Since that time, Jesse Jackson has been extraordinarily active in both national and state political issues. His is a presence felt by almost every coalition, regardless of race. It is not the purpose of this paper to give a detailed biographical treatment of Jackson, and the above should provide an adequate introduction to his thoughts and actions in the sociopolitical
