Also, in a study of the influence of gender, race, and family background on teens' decisions to leave school, Rumberger reported that findings indicated that females were more likely to leave because of pregnancy or marriage and males were more likely to leave because of work. It was further observed that family background strongly influenced dropout behavior and accounted for almost all racial differences in dropout rates.

An exploratory study conducted by Popp examined 34 adult parents who had dropped out of high school. The study focused on respondents' stated reasons for dropping out of high school and for entering educational programs as adults. Study results showed that school dropout was not simply a function of low attendance, low grades, poor peer relations, substance abuse, and/or delinquent behavior, although all factors were present. Instead, Popp suggested that underlying causes could be traced to a process of disengagement from school
