An emphasis on only one of the many concepts emanating from university pure research limits the derivation of potential benefits from all of the discarded concepts. It is true that other firms may opt to attempt the development of some of the other concepts; however, the selection of one concept per firm would mean that much of the pure research developed in the United States would conceivable go to waste. In recent years, of course, Japanese manufacturers have benefited from the exploitation of pure research concepts emanating from American universities that American companies shunned because the potential payoff on the development of the concepts was likely ten years down the road, as opposed to next week.
