In the novel, the trial comes at the end of the book. It's the culmination of a series of events. But it's not the focal point of the story. Jake's story is what the book is really all about. It's his journey. His struggle. In the novel he's a heavy drinker. He's flawed and arrogant and broke. We see him grapple with the idea of taking a stand for justice and the reality of the consequences that occur from taking that stand. Is his desire to win this case based on moral conviction or does he see that the publicity from this high profile case will be good for future business? He does eventually take action based on compassion but his primary motivation is to make money. It's a major source of conflict between Carl Lee, the man he's defending, and himself. There are endless scenes and discussions about money and the fact that Carl Lee can't pay him. In fact, Carl Lee dismisses him as his attorney and hires one of his rivals to defend him instead.
