Women's oncamera roles as sportscasters remained extremely limited until the 1970s when, in order to keep their licenses, stations reached out to hire women and minorities. Some of the early female broadcasters included tennis great Rosemary Casals, skier Suzy Chaffee, Carol Heiss Jenkins, swimmer Donna de Varona, soap opera veteran Lee Arthur, and Jane Chastain who started her television sports career two years after high school by predicting football results for an Atlanta television station.

There seem to be three primary ways in which women, and men, become involved as sports broadcasters.
