Anasazi tribe

ketmakers lived in pithouses, but they later started building aboveground masonry houses or pueblos. At this point, anthropologists drop the name Basketmakers and change to Pueblo, but both terms refer to the Anasazi culture at earlier and later stages of development. In many areas, pithouse and pueblo continued side by side for long periods (Noble 26).

Thousands of Anasazi sites are known, both large and small, simple and complex, and they have been found both within and outside our national parks throughout the Four Corners and the Southwest. Our knowledge of the Anasazi has been much advanced by archaeology over the last several decades, and much of the new information has revolutionized our knowledge of the Anasazi and of similar prehistoric populations (Matlock xii). There were different Anasazi groups in different parts of the Southwest, and the most urban group was the Chaco Anasazi, centered around what are known as Pueblo II and Pueblo III in what is today Chaco Culture National Historical
