The Baroque Era in Art

rd Terborch, who painted numerous paintings of the same subject. One is "The Gallant Officer" from about 1662. In this painting, the woman hesitantly looks at the coins in the hand of the soldier, who stands with legs widespread to suggest his intent. Terborch's painting is more obvious in that the woman wears a low-cut dress and offers wine and fruit, showing that she is a woman of pleasure. Gabriel Metsu patterned "An Offer of Wine" (c. 1650). after "The Proposition," and one critic suggests that Leyster's painting stood as a prototype of the sensitive woman victimized by a seducer. Jacob van Velsen apparently based his "Fortune Teller" on the composition of 'The Proposition," and influences have also been seen in the work of Vermeer.

A painting related stylistically and thematically to "The Proposition" is "Unequal Love" (c. 1631). The work was attributed in the eighteenth century to Jan van Boeckhorst but is now seen as a work by Leyster. The work has not fared well over time because at some point one of the figures in
