Alexander The Great

et/chronicle the facts of Alexander's career. Republican Romans, as can be imagined, shared the Athenian distaste for any man who could set himself up as irreplaceable king, as Alexander did. Julius Caesar, not surprisingly, found much to admire in the Conqueror's choice of career activities. But internal contradictions existed within the Roman historical community:

In Rome Caesar was struck down in the Forum, to save the Republic, which promptly died of it. Under Divine Augustus, no one had a motive for praising Alexander - Caesarians cared to eulogize no rivals.

Both sides were more than a little discomfited by emperors such as mad Caligula, who liked to "disguise" himself as Alexander. This discomfort and Roman dichotomy of ideals is certainly apparent in the biographies written by Plutarch (circa 46 A.D.-120 A.D.).
