As far back as 1913, historian Charles Beard argued that both the American Revolution and Constitution of the United States were essentially economic in character (Beard 5). To support his contention, he drew heavily on The Federalist and on other writings by James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay. This study examines the economic motivations underlying the American Revolution. The thesis of this study is that the American Revolution was fought for economic reasons.
