this is not a human being. But where is the guarantee that the child will lead a healthy, normal life with some expectation of the possibility of becoming a mature human being with a reasonable chance of everything that being human means? Even being fairly sure of this does not, of course, justify killing a human being because we are sure he or she will never be happy (we can never be sure of this at all.) But judging from the horrifying state of so many thousands of children -- most of them originally unwanted -- what justifies us in erring on the side of providing this kind of life for them?

There are no guarantees for anyone who is born anywhere in the world. But it would be lying to say that it was not possible to assess the odds that an unwanted fetus that is allowed to mature into a human being will become one of those abused, starved, neglected children. Therefore it is not enough to merely assert that since it might be a child the fetus must be preserved. We must also consider what the consequences of this preservation are likely to be.
