The presence of student workers in the lab as well as volunteer student tutors means that students using the lab are able to receive assistance on a more personal, and sometimes more effective, level than merely working on a computer provides. At the same time, some students will thrive without personal interaction and the lab is designed to accommodate those types of students, as well.
Indeed, the lab is intended to serve all students at LACC, which means that conflicting demands on resources must be appropriately allocated. The lab's original purpose was to provide remedial instruction and tutoring to students lacking basic math aptitude; that remains a primary goal of the lab. Since mathematics is fundamental to success both within the academic environment as well as in the workforce, ensuring that LACC students are competent in math is a primary directive of the institution as a whole.
