y the need to report on results and justify the expenditure each year to the university and then the state. We do a good and necessary job, which helps, but we do have to consider political shifts as we consider how we are viewed and what we can do to expand the program to reach more people.

M Does the University fund other similar groups?: There are other projects that are part of the Office of Community Relations and Special Events, such as the Alumni Economic Development Group, which is made up of a number of major banks and other financial institutions that regularly to discuss the educational needs of the area's economy. There is an International Executive Program that helps American businesses operating in developing countries. And there is a Labor Resource Center to help with the investment of public funds for worker training programs. What we all have in common is that we serve as connections between the University and the community, especially in terms of economic issues and local economic development. We have other outreach programs here as well.

M Could you describe your organization?: The World Affairs Council of Boston is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization founded in 1949. We work to increase public awareness about issues of global concern by organizing forums and lectures on current international affairs. Our membership stands at about 1,200 individual and 80 corporate members in the greater Boston, and our events are supported by the attendance and financial contributions of these members. We also have a small permanent staff. My job is to organize our lectures, panel discussions, and other kinds of meetings and to bring prominent speakers to speak to our members, such as ambassadors, professors, business leaders, and experts in different fields.
