But this was a fairly passive concept and after the full experience of writing the second of the two novels (and achieving, perhaps, a more satisfactory fictional form for his ideas) Lawrence's "orientation slipped gradually from the philosophical toward the psychological [as] his 'revelation' came closer to 'insight'" (Freeman 128). As he passed through this long process, however, Lawrence's frustration with the world had grown enormously.

Within a few weeks of publication The Rainbow was prosecuted under the Obscene Publications Act and destroyed by order of the court. This meant that publishers were universally unwilling to attempt to publish the sequel and it was not until 1920 that it was published in a private edition in the United States.
