parent family structures have higher academic achievement levels than their peers in single parent families. McLanahan (1999) further studied factors related to lower achievement of children in single parent families and found reasons to include that the disrupted family usually has: fewer resources to devote to upbringing and education, less time and energy to nurture and supervise children, and less access to community resources to supplement parents efforts.

Using data from the National Education Longitudinal Survey (NELS), we find that both process and structural attributes of family social capital (norms, social networks, and relationships between adults and children), are key factors affecting students educational achievement (Israel, 2001). Israel (2001) examined further several structural characteristics in the family and how they can influence the extent of social capital including the presence of one or more parents in the home and the number of siblings. Israel's analysis is based on data collected from NELS. The initial survey sample was more than 1000, 8th grade classes in public schools, 24,000 student responses were collected as well as 22,000 parent responses. Students and parents provided information on background, attitudes about family, school experiences, and future aspirations. Three measures of academic achievement were used as tools. Israel's findings suggests rural families are more likely than urban families to have "traditional" family arrangements, in which both mother and father are present. Results found also conclude, children whose mother and father attended college scored higher on all three measures, and family income has a strong effect except for students in single parent households.
