se particular objects that will serve as the focus of the proposed exhibition, which has as its goal the introduction of the viewer to the "ordinary" use of decorative art and artifacts in Golden Age Islam.

From a scholarly as well as artistic perspective, the exhibition will also draw upon regional works that predate and presage Islam (specifically works from Persia). This element of the exhibit is included in order to address concerns of historical continuity and cultural influences - which Gardner (1958) considers to be of special significance when considering how art shaped and informed by religion tends, in most locales and periods of history, to incorporate pre-existing symbols, concerns, canons of form and content, and ideology. This is done, Gardner (1958) suggests, to more thoroughly integrate the local culture with the new guiding theology and its own unique and inclusive themes.
