Social Influences of Upward-Bound Students

. The fundamental goal of the program is to improve the enrollment and graduation rates of students from postsecondary institutions. The methods include summer programs, tutoring, help with the admissions process, and classes on taking college entrance examinations. This is a multi-year program that includes extensive help with academics and counseling, as well as cultural enrichment. Most programs hold a five-week or eight-week residential summer program that helps students become acquainted with what it would be like to attend a postsecondary school. Students generally have mentors who stay available to them through the school year (McElroy and Armesto, 1998).
