Goodnow (1998), Americans believe in creating well-rounded individuals that extend beyond the cultivation of a good student who only excels academically. Thus, a school system that takes too much time away from other activities (including playtime) has a negative effect for students. Consequently, the sorting of students into different categories also happens much later in the U.S. How a student does in elementary school will undoubtedly make some difference in where he or she goes to college and, ultimately, in what kinds of job choices he or she can make. However, most Americans see the elementary school experience as being more important in developing the character of a whole individual who will be able to make appropriate decisions about their career choices in the future.
