Motorola, Inc.ßis a global leader in wireless,ßbroadband and automotive communications. It is a leader in developing and deploying digital broadband for the home and for the office. Motorola also markets and sells wireless infrastructure communications systems, including hardware and software. Motorola manufactures cell phones as well as two-way radios. These products are sold through and can be activated by a variety of cell phone service providers including AT&T, Cingular, Nextel, and Verizon Wireless to name only a few telecommunications companies that purchase from Motorola.
William Holstein in U.S. News and World Report reports that Motorola had the lion's share of the mobile phone business in the early 1990s. However, Ericsson of Sweden and Nokia of Finland now are the leading sellers of digital mobile phones in the United States. Holstein suggests that Motorola made the mistake of focusing on analog technology in the mid 1990s -- and stuck with this technology until the technology was out of date. Once that happened, Motorola's market share dropped substantially. In response, Motorola launched a serious comeback beginning in 1998. In response, Ericsson, Nokia and other manufacturers introduced smaller, lighter phones with better features such as clearer screens. Manufacturers also reduced prices, which began the cell phone price wars. At the same time, new competitors began vying for sales and market share -- reducing margins even further and making it more difficult for Motorola to regain lost market share (Holstein, 1998, 53).
