Appearance is important at a job interview because of the way it influences first impressions. A neat and professional appearance is important even for organizations which observe a casual dress code. Unless the recruiter specifically asks the candidate to "dress down," business attire should be worn (even if the candidate knows that a casual environment exists at the organization). Interviewers will forgive a candidate who is overdressed for the occasion due to uncertainty about what is appropriate, but are far less forgiving of candidates who underdress (Brown, personal interview).
