Even many doctors oppose it because it goes against the Hippocratic oath of doing no harm to patients, however euthanasia proponents would argue that condemning a patient to suffer through an incurable illness to the bitter end could also be considered as doing them harm. It should also be pointed out that democracy is based on the right to self-determination, as long as it does not negatively impact others. There is also the argument that when those with a terminal illness are nearing an unbearable end, they should be given the right to choose euthanasia because if this is denied them, they will attempt to take measures into their own hands, and this often leads to botched suicide attempts, which cause even more physical and mental distress.
