As early as May 27, thousands of latinos marched through downtown Los Angeles in a tightly organized attack on what participants called a growing sentiment in California and the nation against both legal and illegal immigrants, and their sentiments were reported in the Times (May 28, 1994) (Los Angeles Times Index 9-10).
From the first time the issue was mentioned until September 30, a week before the election, the Los Angeles Times published 128 articles dealing with Proposition 187, and at least a dozen more would be published in the week leading up to the election. In the last week especially, many of the articles addressed two aspects of the mater--the polls showing changes in support for Proposition 187--support that was diminishing after a number of leaders had come out against it--and how taking a stand for or against the proposition might affect the political fortunes of Kathleen Brown and Pete Wilson (both running for governor, with Brown against the proposition and Wilson for it) and Dianne Feinste
