Although Carnegie and Gates share strong doses of confidence which were displayed early in their respective careers, a comparison of their distinctive personalities and background also reveal dramatic differences. Arriving in the US as a nearly penniless immigrant, Carnegie began his life in American living in a Pennsylvania shanty town. Carnegie used to the more genteel poverty of Scotland was a bit taken aback. In Scotland, proud stone masons build aesthetically appealing stone lodgings which were designed to last for centuries. (Wall 79) Arriving in America, Carnegie found himself and his family lodged in a very poorly constructed wooden shack which looked as if it might not last his first winter there.
