Raymond's step-father is a man who constantly claims that there are enemies hidden in different departments in the government, but in truth he is himself the enemy with a mask, doing the business of the very communists he decries. No one likes Raymond in the real world, but in the dream, and after the time in Korea, all the men praise him unthinkingly. This is a graphic depiction of the political fear raised in the 1950s that the communists would be able to control our minds and fool us into accepting our own destruction.

Raymond's mother is the power behind the throne, and she is the Queen of Hearts who will use her own son to gain power. The playing card becomes the means by which Raymond's mind is triggered after his brainwashing, and we know at a key point that his mother is the real enemy because she appears in that guise.
