y affect me emotionally and intellectually, altogether? Crane's story is ranked first because it affects me most emotionally and intellectually, taken together.

I rank Dubois' piece next because it deals with an issue which engages the mind---the history of the United States as it focuses on slavery and its aftermath---and also because it deals with the emotions which that part of our history stirs up. I rank Washington's piece last because it deals with those same issues but it does so only on a mental level. Washington stifles the emotions which slavery and its aftermath stir up.

Washington tells black people that they should behave themselves, get along with the white man, not cause trouble, and not ask for too much by way of rights.
