The primary factor in this industry's future market growth concerns increasing awareness and revelations about the sun's danger. While many are still "sunworshippers" (and still believe they look better with a tan) there is a new sun awareness today. People are recognizing the dangers of overindulging in the sun's rays, wearing hats more often and certainly using more sunscreen than ever before (Givhan, 1989, p. A8).

Too much sun can cause skin cancer, dehydration, heat stroke and premature aging. On the positive side, it has a beneficial effect on vitamin D levels and psychological outlook (Ellis, 1990, E14).

In general, sunlight causes a chronic inflammation of the skin, damaging blood vessels and connective tissue through a continuing process known as photoaging. During chronological aging, a person's skin gets thinner. During photoaging, a person's skin gets thicker.

The damage from the sun comes from the ultraviolet lights emitted. Ultraviolet lights contain several types of rays: (1) UVA, which tan; (2) UVB, which burn, and (3) UVC, which are almost entirely filtered out by the atmosphere before they reach the ground (Ettlinger, 1987, p. S72).

In 1990, 600,000 new cases of skin cancer were diagnosed in the United States, up from 400,000 cases 10 years ago. In 1990, malignant melanoma became the number one common cancer among women between the ages of 25 and 29. It previously had been number three (Angier, 1990, p. C1).
