think, there is little empirical investigation of what African-American men actually believe. The proposed research, which is focused upon collecting attitudinal data of black males toward affirmative action, should therefore expand this area of the affirmative action literature.

Another reason that it is important to examine the attitudes of African-American men toward affirmative active is that it has been suggested (see: Sanchez, 1996; Konrad & Linnehan, 1995) that regardless of whether affirmative action programs have achieved their purposes, it remains crucial to keep the programs because they serve the symbolic value of helping black people to believe that they are making progress in the work force toward true equality. Data collected in the proposed research should help in the determination of whether this claim is in fact true.
