Research Related to Quality of Parent-Child Relationships
Three measures (parental rejection, parental monitoring, and harsh discipline) were used in a study conducted by Whitbeck, Simons and Conger (1991) to evaluate the influence of early parent-child relationships on contemporary adult child-parent relationships. Also, the authors examined for the influence of early parent-child relationships on the level of assistance between adult child and parent. Subjects in the study were 902 married white men and women, all of whom were questioned regarding their current relationships with their elderly parents, the level of assistance provided them, and the quality of their relationship with their parents when they were growing up.
