The Construct of Co-Dependency

ere are several recent studies that are relevant to this discussion of sex-role typing and codependency. Wong, McCreary and Duffy (1990) used a multitrait multimethod technique to examine Bem's sex-role inventory. Essentially, they were concerned with the fact that researchers have tended to utilize Bem's inventory without due regard to the problems entailed. Their intent was to reiterate some of the criticism of the sex-role inventory as well as provide new data regarding the validity of the inventory as a measure of gender role attributes.

The researchers used 36 pairs of male and female undergraduates, with pair members required to have known each other for a minimum of three months prior to the experiment. Participants completed both the BSRI and M-C SD Scale both with self-ratings and ratings of the other member of the pair.
