Alfred Adler was born in 1870, and was a frail child, something which would profoundly affect his later interest in psychology (Famous, 2004). The psychological inferiority he experienced because of his childhood physical problems caused him to feel in constant competition with his siblings, and always having to prove himself. This prompted him to become a physician, but the pain he felt whenever a patient died led him into ophthalmology, and then into psychology. He noticed many of his patients had also suffered feelings of inferiority in childhood, and also that birth order seemed to dictate certain personality traits.
