Sergiovanni also takes exception to applying the corporate notion of "culture" to the school environment. He objects to the term being used interchangeably with community. It is a valid point, though he does not seem to give sufficient weight to the way in which understanding the existing culture of a school may help its members to shape it into a community. He quotes Edgar H. Schein's definition of culture as the way in which an organization defines itself and works together on an unconscious, unspoken level, but Sergiovanni does not directly acknowledge that understanding these unspoken impulses is important to establishing a community that will come organically from within a school.
