Senator Arlen Specter of Illinois

Specter's questioning of Anita Hill was seen by her supporters as especially harsh, and Anthony Lewis in the New York Times compared specter to a "meanspirited smalltown prosecutor." On whichever side he was, Specter seemed to relish his role. Former Senator Malcolm Wallop referred to Specter as "bone dry. He was very taken with himself. He was not a strategic politician. He did not cobble together a group of politicians to get something done" (Brookhiser 43). According to David Buffington, editor of "Pennsylvania Report," a local political newsletter, Specter today is hated by both the left and the right because of Anita Hill and Bork respectively. Buffington also says, though, that Specter has never had friends but only allies: "Every election he puts together a new coalition. He's a fighter, a tactician, a political junkie. He revels in this" (Brookhiser 43).
