At that time, Davis began turning her attention to the plight of the "Soledad Brothers." These were three Black prisoners in Soledad Prison who had been charged unfairly with the murder of a white guard (The Soledad story, 1970, p. 21). One of the "Soledad Brothers," George Jackson, had a teenaged brother named Jonathan who became a traveling companion of Davis (The professor's guns, 1970, p. 13). In August of 1970, shortly after the suspicious death of George Jackson in prison, Jonathan Jackson took some guns belonging to Davis and used them in a daring attempt to free some prisoners from the Marin County Courthouse in Northern California. Jackson and two of the prisoners, as well as a judge who had been taken hostage, were all killed in the gunfight that occurred during the rescue attempt. This event forced Davis to go underground for a while. On October 13, 1970, she was arrested by the FBI in New York City and sent back to California to stand trial on charges of "murder, conspiracy and kidnapping" (Still on the front line, 1990, p. 56).
