Pei's work is strongly characterized by the qualities which are associated with the modernist style. Modernism in architecture includes the use of glass facades and an obsession "with slick technical efficiency." Another aspect of architectural modernism is a "preoccupation with bare geometrical mass." Pei is particularly interested in the functional purposes of architecture. As such, he often seeks to allow the form to follow the function in the design of his buildings. It is interesting to note that Pei's general style is a combination of modernist as well as historical influences. Thus, although his style is basically modern, Pei also shows a "classical" sensibility in the way he "perfects the building functionally and emphasizes total, comprehensive planning." Pei combines these influences in the creation of his simple, elegant structures. For example, these factors are all evident in the Glass Pyramid at the Louvre. The modernist emphasis on the use of glass facades is clearly evident in the overall structure of the pyramid. The emphasis on geometric forms can also be seen in the pyramid itself, as well as in the diamond shaped pattern which forms the framework for the glazed plate glass windows. A classical influence in the Glass Pyramid can be seen in the clearly ordered, functional design of the work. The form of the pyramid is effective in meeting the function of the structure, which is to admit visitors into the Louvre and orient them to the various branches of the complex.
