Zevin (2004) points out that Jane is a rebel against Christianity itself by her refusal to suffer in silence and turn the other cheek. Instead of being mild and meek when her cruel cousin John strikes her, she fights back. She tells her unloving aunt off so effectively that the latter reminds her of the slight on her deathbed. She refuses to accept St. John's marriage proposal because in his narcissistic religiosity it hasn't occurred to him to love her for herself, rather than as an object of God's love, which he falsely claims to embody.

While accurate as far as they go, the analysis here of Brontd's use of the moon, fire, food, and the chestnut tree that is split by lightning as metaphor is rather pedestrian and obvious.
