Nora panics and tells Mrs. Linde everything, and she tells Nora to prevent Torval from opening the letter as long as possible and goes to speak to Krogstad. Nora distracts Torval by previewing her tarantella for the evening, and dances wildly. She manages to stall him from opening the letter until after the party. Mrs. Linde returns saying she left a note for Krogstad, but he will be gone for until the next evening.

The next night the costume party takes place, and Krogstad meets Mrs. Linde in the living room, and their conversation reveals they had once been deeply in love but Mrs. Linde left him for a wealthier man who could help support her family (Ibsen; SparkNotes).
