Arsenic Contamination of Groundwater

ning.

Paoloni, et al (2000) also say that chronic endemic hydro-

arsenism is caused by the consumption, over prolonged periods, of water that contains higher than normal concentrations of arsenic. It is estimated that approximately 30 [mu]g of arsenic per kilo of body weight is incorporated into the human organism every day. This is solely on the basis of the average arsenic content in food, much of which is cultivated by irrigation with contaminated groundwater supplies. The WHO estimates that the average daily intake of inorganic arsenic from water itself reaches similar levels to that ingested via foodstuffs. This clearly enhances the risk of arsenic poisoning faced by individuals living in areas where groundwater contamination is excessive.

Nielsen and Robinson (1998) examined arsenic concentrations in groundwater and their relation to bedrock lithology in eastern New England. They commented that the concentration of arsenic locally, in that region, exceeded the U.S. Environmental Protect
