p> Frankl (1984) contended further the essential goal of human beings is to find meaning in life, as opposed to either finding pleasure or avoiding pain. This concept is relevant to advanced nursing practice, as many of the people to whom care is delivered by the advanced practice nurse will experience severe painùeither physical or mental.

Frankl (1984) based the logotherapy model on his experiences in Nazi concentration camps in the Second World War. Of the concentration camp inmates, Frankl (1984) said they experiences three phases of mental reactions: "the period following à admission; the period when à well entrenched in camp routine; and the period following à release and liberation" (p. 22). This staged experience holds relevance for patients in a health care environment. Based on this experience, however, Frankl (1984) structured the logotherapy model wherein "there are three main avenues on which one arrives at meaning in life" (p. 146).
